Natalio Krasnogor is Professor of Computing Science and Synthetic Biology at Newcastle University, co-directs Newcastle’s Interdisciplinary Computing and Complex BioSystems (ICOS – http://ico2s.org/) research group and is the director of the Centre for Synthetic Biology and the Bioeconomy (CSBB – http://www.ncl.ac.uk/csbb/). Krasnogor holds a EPSRC Leadership Fellowship in Synthetic Biology (grant EP/J004111/1 & 2), is Principal Investigator for the EPSRC Program Grant “Synthetic Portabolomics: Leading the way at the crossroads of the Digital and the Bio Economies” (EP/N031962/1) and was the overall lead in the EPSRC Synthetic Biology ROADBLOCK project (grants EP/I031642/1, EP/I031812/1, EP/I03157X/1) involving Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Warwick and Bradford Universities.

He won several best papers prizes, Bronze, Silver and Gold awards of the American Computing Society’s (ACM) HUMIES award for human-competitive results that were produced by any form of genetic and evolutionary computation as well as an ACM’s Impact award. His research activities lie at the interface of Computing Science and the Natural Sciences, e.g. Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

In this project, Prof Krasnogor wants to further research at the interface of Synthetic Biology and DNA/RNA nanotechnology with the objective of creating artificial, programmable organelles inside cells that could act as orthogonal biosynthesis loci. Additionally, he will pursue research on the simulation, modeling and complex networks based formalisms for capturing knowledge about engineered synthetic biosystems.
